Ring O'Bells

The Ring O'Bells was situated at 289 Harrogate Road, Eccleshill. Demolished in the summer of 2007, it has been replace by a Co-op mini-market (see photo below). This pub was built in the second half of the 19th century as a staging inn for stage coaches. Maps show it to constitute two long rectangular buildings. It was then rebuilt to a different design a little further south some time between 1921 and 1934. The rebuild was necessary to make room to put in a new road - Pullan Avenue.
From the New Tyke Taverner, 1985:
The Ring O'Bells at the roundabout at the junction of Harrogate Road and Pulland Avenue in Eccleshill was built as a pub in 1933. It took over the licence from a hostelry opposite called The Smithy, hence the hammer and anvil motif in some of the stained glass windows. The present licencee, Steve White, has been here two years and since the end of the Cavalier Steak Bar service he has carried on the bar snacks and meals, complete with dishes like Steak Canadienne, salad garnish and french fries (£1.10), home made individual dishes such as steak and mushroom pie, chips and peas (£2.00) and beef curry with rice or chips (£2.00).
All this together with handpulled Tetley Mild and Bitter (and a grand drop one might add) makes it a place for the hungry as well as the thirsty. The room that used to be the steak bar is now used for functions such as wedding receptions, christenings, engagements, etc, finger buffets being available at £2.50 a head or a four course meal at £5 a head. The room accommodates some 50 people for a sit downdo or 70 for a buffet. For the darts and dominos enthusiasts The Ring O'Bells has a team in the Bradford Invitation League who play on a Tuesday evening and the arrer chuckers have already secured a small trophy (behind the bar) for their prowess in the 1984 Summer League, having won the championship.
For those who like real fire to to with their real ale, plans are afoot to install one in the main lounge. Now that would be literally a warm welcome from a pub whose grub matches the beer in quality and price. The pub is open all permitted hours except Saturday evening when it opens at 7pm.
