The Plough

The Plough was situated on Boonhill Road. This pub closed in 2011.

A decade on from its closure by the estate owner, multi-millionaire “Freeserve” founder, Peter Wilkinson, a dispute still rages about the property. Mr Wilkinson, wants to turn the property into two local-occupancy rentals and 4 holiday homes. Located in a National Park, the villagers wanted the Inn to be determined as a community asset and for Ryedale Council to make a compulsory purchase order. The legal argument is confusing. Having been closed for 10 years, and the public not having had access in that period, the owner has argued the public has not had access and therefore it cannot be a community asset.
The 77km “Tabular Hills Walk” between Scarborough and Helmsley (connecting with the “Cleveland Way”) passes through the village and therefore there could be tourist as well as local custom. The villagers have argued it could be a viable business.

The Community Ownership Fund has granted £290,127 to Fadmoor Community Pub Limited to buy and renovate the building and to turn it into an all-day pub and café for the community. The project is also intended to provide social events and local services for residents.
