The Horse & Groom was situated on Barnsley Road.  In 2021 the derelict pub (attacked by arsonists in July 2019) was to be bought by Barnsley Council for demolition and to redevelop the site as a market square. From Jun to Dec 2022, and annually thereafter, a market was set to occupy the site, to be called the Horse and Groom Square. In Oct 2024 Barnsley Council was looking for artists to create murals depicting the area's culture and history, to brighten up the square. However, the market attendance has dwindled from eight stalls in Sept 2023, to one in Oct 2024, and that trader often takes only £10 in the week.
