Queens Hotel

The Queens Hotel was situated on Gibbet
Street. |
My maternal grandfather, Frank Snowden
was a Tetley publican, and with his wife, my grandmother, Clara, ran the pub
through the war years. He was there for some years before the war and left,
due to ill health, in 1948 (possibly 1947). I was born there in 1942.
The pub had stables in the yard at the back, which was accessed from a side
street . There were never any horses in my time.
There was the "Buff Room" on the first floor. A large hall where,
apparently, the Hon. Order of Buffaloes used to meet.
There were steps up to the front door on Gibbet Street, and railings on the
kerbside, to prevent drunks from staggering under the traffic on the street!
During WW2' soldiers from the Duke of Wellington's Barracks drank there.
The Queens was demolished when a multi storey car park was built across
Gibbet Street.
Incidentally, prior to the Queens, Grandad was publican of the Fleece Inn at
Barkisland, which, I believe is still standing. |
