The Hammer & Hand was situated on Main Road. This grade-II listed pub is now in residential use.
 

 
Listed building details:
Hammer and Hand 14.7.55 GV II Inn, now house. 1784 on datestone. For Emmanuel and Betty Strickland. Herringbone-tooled sandstone on tooled plinth; tooled raised quoins; pantile roof. Central-stairhall plan, one room deep, with rear service wing. 2- storey, 3-window front. Door of 6 raised and fielded panels in rusticated surround of long and short quoins. Datestone over door consists of an oval centre panel enclosing the initials: S E B. 1784 To each side a rectangular panel carved with the arms of the Blacksmiths' company - a phoenix in flames with 3 hammers - and inscribed: -"By hammer and hand" and "All arts do stand". Venetian window in raised, keyed surround over door. Remaining windows are 16-pane sashes in raised, keyed surrounds. Raised first-floor band and cavetto-moulded eaves course with iron brackets carrying the eaves gutter. Coped gables with shaped kneelers. End stacks. Interior. Ground floor: exposed quarter-round moulded joists to front rooms. Doors of 6 raised and fielded panels, with original fittings, and similar panelling around cellar door beneath stairs. Panelled window recesses. Room to left: stone fireplace with dentilled cornice shelf over frieze carved with garlands in low relief. Room to right: stone fireplace with moulded cornice shelf over finely tooled lintel with incised voussoirs and reeded tooled jambs. First floor: panelling around attic stairs enclosed behind door on H hinges. Room to right: late C18 firegrate in plain stone surround. Attic: 2 pairs of crossed apex cruck trusses.
