The Elephant & Castle was situated on the High
Street. This pub was reduced in size in the 1930 when the right hand side
became a Woolworths (now a Tescos). The remainder of the pub closed in the
1960s. |

My grandparents Laurie and Mary Steel owned this
hotel from 1930-1943. They had 4 children Beatrice,Fred,Victor and Audrey.
My mother Beatrice married Kenneth McMillan in 1939 and I was born in 1942.
I’ve been told that Pop used to have boxing matches on Friday nights and
dinner Saturdays. I believe this area is now a theatre |
