The Elephant & Castle was situated on the High Street. This pub was reduced in size in the 1930 when the right hand side became a Woolworths (now a Tescos). The remainder of the pub closed in the 1960s.

My grandparents Laurie and Mary Steel owned this hotel from 1930-1943. They had 4 children Beatrice,Fred,Victor and Audrey. My mother Beatrice married Kenneth McMillan in 1939 and I was born in 1942. I’ve been told that Pop used to have boxing matches on Friday nights and dinner Saturdays. I believe this area is now a theatre
