Irwin Arms

The Irwin Arms was situated on Selby Road. This pub has now been demolished to make way for a supermarket.

My parents managed The Irwin Arms from 1933-37. Then, in 1937, the New Irwin was built on the bowling green of the old pub. My parents did not like the new pub and moved to Dorset in 1937/38. Prior to the Irwin Arms they managed the Travellers Rest in Halton/Whitkirk until 1931 when they moved into a private house so that I would not be born in a pub. They then managed the Irwin Arms – which was adjacent to a dairy farm. As a youngster I used to go with the farmer ( Mr Stephenson ) on his horse-drawn milk round. A very different world. And I am 88 !
