The Star & Garter was situated at 5 Bridge
Road. This grade-II listed building was later used as The Barcelona
night club and Funtasia. |

The Star was legendary in the 1960s when I
started going there. It had live bands on 7 nights a week and was always
busy, but weekends were often a madhouse.
Thursday night was 'Ladies night' and coaches used to arrive from all around
the area with gangs of girls who were eagerly eyed up by the local lads.
When it closed in the 1970s it became Raphael's, and tried to aim for the
upmarket crowd. Later on it became the Barcelona although I don't remember
it being the Funtasia (Was this a kids play area or something).
The building is still standing, pretty much as it used to be, |
