The Gaiety

The Gaiety was situated at 88-95 Roundhay Road. This pub was opened on 7th December 1972 on the site of the old Gaiety Kinema.  The decor of The Gaiety was in keeping with that of the Edwardian era. On opening night , actor Stephen Lewis, 'Blakey' in the T.V. situation comedy, 'On The Buses', pulled the first pint. It had closed by 1990 and demolished by 2001, it is now the site of the Archway, a resource centre for 18-25 year olds. In 1976 Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper stabbed Emily Jackson, 42, over 50 times after picking her up while she was soliciting outside The Gaiety. In 1977, a prostitute from Chapeltown, Irene Richardson, was also murdered by Sutcliffe in Roundhay Park. The 28-year-old lived in a boarding house on Cowper Street, and was also picked up outside this pub.
