The Royal Hotel was situated on Whitby Road.
The landlord of the former Royal Hotel, Loftus, building has been fined £14,900 for failing to maintain the property in accordance with Redcar & Cleveland Council’s order to address a number of issues. He’d been given permission in 2016 for 7 flats on the site. In 2017, he was ordered to address the maintenance issues, as the site had become an eyesore.

Following a stalled development of 16 flats approved in 2016, approval has now been given for demolition of the derelict pub, and the building of 16 self-contained flats for vulnerable adults requiring assisted living.

The company originally granted planning permission to demolish the structure and build supported-living accommodation went into administration, and the property was auctioned for £75,000 in 2023. The new owners intend to convert the property into a 16 bed (Class 1) studio apart-hotel, following success of a similar scheme in nearby Redcar (Bowles Hotel, Redcar). To be called Bowles Hotel, Loftus. Planning permission yet to be granted.
Kathryn Ludlow (September 2024)
Despite Planning Permission having been granted on 21 Jan 2025 for the "Bowles Hotel, Loftus" development, no building work has been started (has to be started within 3 years of date of approval) and more questions are being asked about the "eyesore".
