The Chequers

The Chequers was a moorside coaching inn on Osmotherley High Lane and was famed for a turf fire, which was said to have burned continuously for 200 years. The inn sign included the following lines: “Be not in haste, Step in and taste, Ale tomorrow for nothing”. The pub closed in 1945 and was a tearoom for some time afterwards. The building is grade-II listed and dates from the mid 18th century.
