The Elephant & Castle was situated on
Cross Street. This pub was demolished to make way for road improvements. |

In the 1871 census, my great great grandfather George Hartley was the grocer
and victualler of the Elephant and Castle. |

My great grandparents, Watson & Eliza Williams
were the publicans here from the 1880s to at least 1911. Although Watson
died in 1898 aged 65, Eliza and her son George and daughter Emily kept
running the pub for the next 20 years. |
