The Bell Hagg Inn was situated at 1 Manchester
Road, Sheffield. This pub was built in 1832 and had five floors. Also known
as The John Thomas. This pub closed in 2005 and has now been converted into
a private dwelling. |

The John Thomas pub was owned by two good
friends John and Jennine Chidlaw. Sadly Jennine died in early 2001 and John
was left to run the business. In 2004 John had a severe stroke which has
left him invalided and unable to work. Both John and Jennine had a passion
for the John Thomas and would surely still be running as a thriving business
were they both still with us. I now live abroad but on my very occasional
trips back to Sheffield I drive past The John Thomas and remember some
wonderful evenings, especially the Tuesday night music. Fantastic, but sad
to see the place now in almost ruin. |

I remember the Bell Hagg Inn, on the Manchester
Road, as being the very first pub I ever visited in Sheffield. It was in
February 1979 on the day I had an interview at Sheffield University. It was
also (coming from the south) the first time I had “northern” pie, mash and
peas!! A pub with a load of character – cheap booze in the supermarkets has
a lot to answer for!! |
