The North Pole was situated at 60-62 Sussex Street and
is now used as a mosque. |

My mother lived at this pub c1949 - my grandfather was the landlord before

My great grandfather, William Rutter, was the licensee of this pub from
about 1912-1918. He died in 1919. My father was born in 1916 and lived
there with his mum whilst his father William Henry was fighting in the war.
William had three other sons, one of them was killed in WW1 The family
business was carting and they had several horses until the 1950's. There is
supposed to be a resident ghost called Tom who usually appeared with a
strong smell of alcohol! Truprint who took the pub over supplied me with
that information from a newspaper cutting. I wish I had taken up their offer
of seeing inside the old building. Now it is almost unrecognisable. |

Because I was in the Navy on artic
convoys to Russia, I often tell people I have cleaned windows at the North
Pole ,They don`t think that it is true but it was after I got demobbed and
helped a window cleaner it was still a pub then 1950. |
