Prince Of Wales

The Prince Of Wales was situated on Hope Street.
Also known as Batties. |

This pub was called the Drum And Monkey before
it was the Prince of Wales! My Grandfather Fred Todd was a regular in there,
and at that time there was a drum, and a false monkeys head in the bar.
When it was decided to change the name, the landlord gave my grandfather the
monkey's head as a memento, and someone else got the drum.
My grandfather still had the monkeys head when I was young (I was born in
1951) and he used to let me play with it. He must have told a newer landlord
about it and he asked if he could have the head back, so he gave it to him.
I don't know what happened to it after that! |

I remember the Drum. My grandad, my dad and
others used to go down to the Drum on a Sunday just before lunch. We used to
live in Chestnut Grove. Thornaby. Everyone is scattered around now. Some
have passed away. We now live in Australia. |
