The Magpie was situated on the corner of Penleys
Grove Street and Townend Street. This pub closed c2004 and has now been
demolished and replaced by a block of flats. |

I lived across the road from this pub
and watched it being built. One night a young man sat down in one of the
seats and behind him was a lamp that was a fish aquarium, sitting down the
back of his head hit the bowl and it shattered. I can remember water pouring
over his shoulders and people grabbed pint glasses to collect the fish of
the floor and put them into water filled pints. |

My grandma ran the pub in the 1980s, Mary and Frank
Clayton, and my mum Christine Sharp, remember jack who was the cleaner,
my grandma died in the pub 1984, |

pub with some amazing regulars and characters. I took polly on as a
barmaid and Dave Fratter also.Became good friends with kev Gee. Have
