The Spotted Cow was situated at 16 Barbican
Road. This pub is now used as a Chinese restaurant. The publican in 1893 was Marmaduke
Horsley, in 1967 Norman Whitehead. |
|
In the 1950’s this was owned by Hammonds Brewery Bradford. My Uncle, Water
Stringer was the Licensee. |

Coming from Munich in Bavaria, I lived at 50
Heslington Rd from 1976 to 1977. I was quite a regular at The Spotted
Cow, and on the weekends the band playing on the premises always ended
their progaramme with the song "Comply with me". I still remember the
pub as if it were yesterday |

I used to bike it to York with my
dad Fred Stringer. We biked it from South Kirkby Pontifract. We used to
camp on the banks of the River Ouse and on odd times would call in to
the 'Spotted Cow' to see his uncle who was the licencee at that time. |

This was one of York’s most popular
live music venues; Shed Seven and Chris Helme from Seahorses started out
with gigs here in the back bar. There was a lively scene in the front
bar with a pool table and jukebox.
I actually lived here for a short period in the early 1990s. It’s very
sad that these places are lost to us, more every day. |

A group of us University students
used to go to the pub late in the evening, usually around 10pm for a
pint and a game of dominoes, after studying. We were amused when the
landlord introduced cocktails with provocative names - 'sex on the
beach',' long cool screw' and couldn't imagine asking the elderly barman
for such a drink! Very nice pub and very easy going. |
