Turks Head

The Turks Head was situated at 25 St
Andrewgate. This pub was present by 1893 when the publican was George Mansell. |

I remember back in the early 1960's
passing this pub on weekend nights when we would wander from the Woolpack
pub (now a NHS surgery) on Stonebow, where Guppy would hold Saturday night
discos, to the Anglers pub (now Snickleways pub) on Goodramgate. There was
always noise coming from the Turks Head but it was a rough, dark area and we
never went in! One night we did summon up courage and opened the outer door
into a long, dim corridor, the noise increasing as we approached the closed
door to the bar. We opened the door, the noise promptly stopped and we were
faced with a bar full of what looked not too friendly faces watching us. We
stopped in the door, looked long, then retreated backwards down the
corridor. When we reached the outer door the noise started up again ... we
never went back to the Turks Head, St Andrewgate! |
