Certificate dated 14th
September 1899 for a 500 franc share in this African railway
company. Engraving by the famous military painter and
illustrator, Louis Charles Bombled (1862 to 1927) of the
Ethiopian emperor Menelik II on his horse awaiting an oncoming
train. The Swiss engineer Alfred Ilg, minister under emperor Menelik
II, convinced him to build this railway from the coast inland
bound, ca. 78 km. over mountains 2.424 m. high. It was a small
size track from Djibouti, along Harare, Antotto and Kaffa to the
White Nile and Addis Ababa. The money was raised in France that
had a strategic interest in the area after the Abyssinian war
with Italy. The track was completed in 1917, one year after the
death of Alfred Ilg
Certificate size is
42
cm high x 32 cm wide (17.5" x 13"). It will be mounted in a
mahogany frame, with gold inlay, size 45 cm high x 35 cm wide.
