About This
Company
In March 1928 Broadcast Relay Services
Limited was established to provide a new service relaying radio programmes
by wire to loudspeakers in subscribers' homes.
Broadcast Relay Services – a division of British Electric Traction and
the supplier of ‘piped radio’ services in areas without a good signal –
originally sought the London weekend ITV contract in 1955. To back their
considerable experience in colonial television and domestic relay services,
they brought the newspaper group Associated, publishers of the Daily Mail,
who had the financial and political muscle that a new television company
would need.
The consortium was named ‘Associated-Rediffusion Television Limited’,
combining the name of the newspaper group with that of BRS subsidiary ‘Rediffusion’,
and the ITA offered them the 5-day weekday contact in London. They accepted
without hesitation, and thus took on the bulk of the responsibility for the
look and feel of the new independent television service.
