shares of £50 each in this early Irish railway. Dated 31st August 1846
and issued to The Right Honourable Edward Michael, Earl Of Longford
(1817 - 1860), of Pakenham Hall, Castleholland, Ireland. Right hand border
consists of a drawing of an early locomotive and carriages. Actual
handwritten signature of Henry Beausire, company secretary. Certificate size is
11 cm
high x 23 cm wide (4.5" x 9.5"). It will be mounted in a mahogany frame,
with gold inlay, size 31 cm high x 39 cm wide.
The certificate is
shown unframed as all items are mounted to
order.

About This Company
The Midland Great Western Railway of Ireland was
incorporated in 1845. The Dublin-Enfield line opened on 28/06/1847,
reached Galway by 01/08/1851 and Sligo on 03/09/1862.
Monaghan-Clones opened 02/03/1863. The Liffey branch, giving access
to the port of Dublin, was opened in 1864. Absorbed Dublin and Meath
Railway in 1867, Sligo and Ballaghadereen in 1877, Navan and
Kingscourt in 1888. Lines to Killala, opened 1893 and Clifden
and Achill in 1895, but these did not deliver on promised traffic
and were closed in 1931, 1935 and 1937 respectively. Peak route
mileage 538 miles (third largest after GSWR and GNR). Constituent of
Great Southern Railway in 1924.
