Certificate, dated 1st Decmber 1852,
for one £20 share in this shipping company. Black and white certificate
with imprint of company seal. Issued to Edward Gohrab of 1 Bryanston
Square, London, which at the time was the location of the Turkish
Embassy in Great Britain. Actual handwritten signatures of J Lambert, H
Major and J Margetson, all directors of the company.
The General Screw Steam Shipping
Company inaugurated the first contract mail service between
England and South Africa in 1850. Two years later the Company signed an
agreement with the Admiralty to extend its monthly service to India with
eight ships specially built for the purpose. The company however was in
financial straits, and in 1857 its eight ships were sold to a new
concern, the European and American Steam Shipping Company for £320,000,
which was about half their original cost.
Certificate size is
21 cm
high x 23 cm wide. It will be mounted in a mahogany frame,
with gold inlay, size 31 cm high x 39 cm wide.
