Clifford Arms

The Clifford Arms was situated on the corner of Clifford Street and Peto Street. This old pub dated back to the early 1860’s when F. Robertson was the licensee; the 1878 Drink Map shows a beer house on this site. It sounds as if this was a good pub to get a drink after “time” had been called as in September 1915 landlady Emily Hancock was fined a total of Ł27.00 for three offences of selling intoxicating liquor outside the permitted hours. The pub was granted a full licence on 23rd October 1962 but the licence was placed in suspense on 7 March 1968. The building was demolished shortly afterwards for the redevelopment of the Golden Grove council flats. The pub was the property of Barlow’s Victoria Brewery in the early years of the 20th century, but was a Brickwood’s house when it closed for good in 1968.
