The Bell

The Bell was situated on Carter Hill.
This pub was demolished in
1889. A post office was built on the site and in 1899 a plaque put in the
building to commemorate the fact that one Richard Quiney wrote a letter to
William Shakespeare from here, dated the 25th October 1598. This is the only
known letter addressed to Shakespeare in existence and the original is
preserved in the museum at his birthplace, Stratford upon Avon. The Grange
St Pauls Hotel now occupies the site. |
