Three Jays

Date of photo: 1938

The Three Jays was situated on Sunninghill Road and Oriental Road. This pub was present by 1851 as The New Inn, closing in the late 1980s. Re-development plans were refused and it re-opened briefly as an Eldridge and Pope house. It burnt down not too much later and the site is now redeveloped with apartments.

The three jays Sunninghill was my local for a while, always very dodgy the way it was closed, the landlady who was put in was young and hopeless, the place was badly run for a few weeks by her and her dope smoking cohorts before the mystery mid day fire, when everyone happened to be out, apart from the dog, which apparently succumbed, but nobody saw. There was no obvious damage externally, the place sat empty for a while, then suddenly was knocked down and redeveloped. It had been a popular well run local, and was a nice building, shame,

David Woodroof 1976/1980 It was THE pub that all of us went to from school (Charters) and I have many happy memories
John Reed 1968/1974 This was my main local for the 1968 to 1974 when I moved from the area. I occasionally helped out behind the bar in the days when Wilf Clotworthy (former chorus master Cliff Adams Singers) and his wife Val were there. Bit of graffiti in gents read 'I jump for glee I jump for joy, I got here before Kilroy' followed by a different handwriting 'Alas my friend too soon you spoke, Kilroy was here but his pencil broke.'
