The Horse & Gate was situated at 52 High Street. This pub has now been redeveloped into shops.

The Landlord & Landlady of ‘The Horse & Gate’ before, during, and just after WW2, were: Earnest Cambell Rickson and Florence Martha Rickson, my great grandparents. My grandmother, Queenie Mary Rickson, gave birth to my uncle, David George Rickson, in the flat above the pub in 1933. Although my great grandmother was the landlady of the pub, women were not made welcome by her; Mrs Rickson did not approve of women frequenting pubs!
After leaving The Horse & Gate, my great grandfather became the first steward of Ramsey Gentleman’s Club, when it was above what is now ‘Pet Havens’, and he and my great grandmother lived above the dress shop called ‘Hyslops’.
