The Ancient Order of Froth
Blowers, a 1920's drinking/fun society had a VAT (group of AOFB members
numbering more than 25) based at this pub. A gentleman called Henry G
Clements was the lead member according to the Froth Blowers booklet which
listed all the VATs http://frothblowers.co.uk/mb2130.htm |

William Sidney Carter was the landlord
of this pub sometime before 1939. He was previously working at the
Pakenham Arms (another pub
now closed) at 1, Pakenham Street, where his father Charles Albert Carter
was landlord. William’s daughter Edna (my mother in law) was born at the
Pakenham. She remembered the Downham Arms. William had two pot men called Mr
Wish and Mr Bone. He had a dog that used to drink the slops, sleep and then
wake up with a hangover! There was a flood once and William dried out the
baize on the billiard table by ironing it. He used some wood from the old
bar to make a shove ha’penny board. |
