The Freemens Arms was situated on the corner of
Freeman Street and Alfred Street Central. This pub was closed and demolished
in the early 1970s when the area was redeveloped. |
|
My dad was landlord of the Freeman's from 1952
to 1957 then we moved down the road to
The Oliver Cromwell. The
Freemans had one vaults that ran the full length of the pub, a wide passage
where customers stood for a drink and a best room with seating all around.
There were outside toilets Both the Freeman's and the Cromwell had deep
cellars cut down into the sandstone that was below both pubs. These were
forty feet deep and kept the beer cool not cold in summer It was a
magnificent sight seeing the draymen ,with the shipstones horses ,put the
wooden hogsheads ( 56 gallons) of beer down the deep shaft with rope and
pulley |
